Review of an expert opinion

Checking an expert report for completeness of the study, sound reasoning in the conclusions, consistency between questions and answers, sufficient input data and contradictions.

What is included

Checking an expert report for completeness of the study, sound reasoning in the conclusions, consistency between questions and answers, sufficient input data and contradictions.

The review is based on the report, questions, documents, appendices and materials provided that the expert used or should have used.

What is checked

  • consistency between the conclusions and the questions posed;
  • the presence and completeness of the examination section;
  • sufficiency of input data and materials;
  • description of objects, photographs, documents and characteristics;
  • the reasoning from established facts to conclusions;
  • competence, methodology, contradictions and omissions;
  • whether additional questions or a repeat examination are needed.

What to provide

  • the expert or specialist report;
  • the court order, contract or assignment;
  • the list of questions for the expert;
  • appendices, photographs, diagrams, records and documents;
  • the relevant case materials;
  • your comments on the report;
  • the deadline by which the document is needed.

Pricing

from RUB 25,000. The final price depends on the length of the report, the number of questions and appendices, urgency, the need to engage a specialist in the relevant field and the document format.

Verifiability of calculations and input values

If a conclusion depends on a calculation, the reviewer checks more than the final amount or value. It is important to trace the origin of the input values, the formula used, the sequence of calculations and the conditions in which the result is meaningful. Correct arithmetic does not eliminate an error in the choice of input data.

For each material value, it is helpful to identify the document, page, date and unit of measurement. The next check is whether the value relates to the object and period under examination. For example, a value for another product, area or operating mode may appear to fit the table but fail to describe the subject of the question posed.

  • Whether the sources of the input values are clear.
  • Whether the values correspond to the object, period and conditions of the study.
  • Whether units of measurement and conversions between them are consistent.
  • Whether the chosen coefficients and assumptions are explained.
  • Whether the calculation can be reproduced using the text and appendices.

Particular attention is paid to summary tables: whether an item has been included twice, part of the object omitted or incomparable data combined. Rounding can have different significance in intermediate and final calculations, so a comment must show its actual effect.

A substantive review connects the discrepancy found with the conclusion. Correcting arithmetic without changing the answer is one situation; a result based on an unsupported input value is another. Working tables and detailed breakdowns, when available, are useful for this check. Missing data are stated explicitly, without deriving unknown values backwards from a desired result.

Inquiry

Submit the report and your questions to the expert

An initial assessment requires: the expert's or specialist's report, the court order or contract, the questions posed, appendices, photographs, documents and your position in the dispute.

  • identifying methodological and logical errors;
  • checking the completeness of input data;
  • analysing whether the conclusions are substantiated;
  • preparing questions for the expert;
  • materials for a repeat or additional examination.
